Almost everyone looks online before they call. 98% of consumers search online for local businesses (BrightLocal), and 46% of all Google searches have local intent. If you're not on page one — or in the map pack — you're effectively invisible, and a competitor is getting the customer. The good news: being invisible on Google is almost never bad luck. It's a short list of fixable reasons.
Reason 1: No (or incomplete) Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest driver of local visibility — it's what puts you in the map pack and on Google Maps. Google reports that customers are 70% more likely to visit and 50% more likely to consider buying from a business with a complete profile. If yours is unclaimed, half-filled, or has the wrong hours, you're handing away the easiest wins.
Fix: claim it, fill in every field (categories, services, hours, photos, service area), and keep it current.
Reason 2: Your website has no SEO fundamentals
If your pages are missing title tags, meta descriptions, proper headings, and structured data, Google struggles to understand what you do and who you serve — so it doesn't rank you. These basics are invisible to visitors but everything to search engines.
Fix: unique title + meta description per page, a clear H1, descriptive headings, and schema markup.
Reason 3: Few or no reviews
Reviews influence both where you rank in local results and whether someone picks you over the business next to you. A thin or stale review profile quietly holds you down.
Fix: ask every happy customer for a Google review — a simple follow-up text is enough.
Reason 4: Your site is slow or not mobile-friendly
Google indexes the mobile version of your site first, and more than 60% of searches happen on phones. A slow or clumsy mobile experience hurts both rankings and the visitors who do find you. (More on that in 7 signs your website is costing you customers.)
Fix: a fast, mobile-first site — ideally loading in under three seconds.
Reason 5: No content for what people actually search
If your whole site is one "Home / About / Contact," there's nothing for Google to rank against the specific things customers type. Businesses that publish pages targeting real queries simply have more doors for people to walk through.
Fix: add service pages and helpful articles that answer the questions your customers ask.
The fix, in order
- Claim & fully complete your Google Business Profile.
- Nail on-page SEO: titles, meta descriptions, headings, schema.
- Collect Google reviews consistently.
- Make the site fast and mobile-first.
- Publish content that targets real customer searches.

Why isn't my business showing up on Google?

How long until I rank?
A complete Business Profile can surface in local results within days to weeks; competitive organic rankings typically take a few months of consistent work.
